Suicidal Thoughts in Canada - Infographic

I have had writers block for the last few weeks so I decided to put together my first Infographic using the free tools at Canva. I have collected together the latest data on Suicide Ideation. (Suicidal Thoughts) released by Statistics Canada.

In 2015, more than 3 million Canadians over the age of twelve suffered from Suicide Ideation (SI)  That is more than 10% of the total population. It is estimated that up to 4% of these people actually followed through with some sort an attempt or self harm.

Women are over represented in the SI population.  Women account for 57% of those dealing with suicidal thoughts.

A closer look at the youth statistics reveals that 14% of Canadians between the ages 15 and 24 years old have at some time in their life thought about suicide.  Further to that, 5% have made a suicide plan, with 4% having actually made an attempt.

These statistics are even more troubling when you consider that only a third of young Canadians have ever reach out for professional help.  Too many young people are suffering in silence with deadly consequences. Among young Canadians suicide is the second most common cause of death.*

* (I ran out of room on my infograph to include this last stat.)
