A drop of water

A drop of water kept me alive
but you saved my life.
My mind had already collapsed into its set course
as I walked the route I'd visualized.
I was no longer thinking,
the key in hand
my purpose was complete.
Then I happened upon the bucket
the one I had placed below the leaking pipe
days before
It was full and overflowing.
I stopped,
I took off the head phones
and emptied the bucket.

It was only a slight diversion
but it slowed my pace and purpose.
I still took the drink,
I still collapsed unconscious,
but the continuum was further along
and so I was rescued
and kept alive.

When I came to, my vitals were intact.
but I wasn't.
My mind still reeled.
My thoughts still dark.
It was only when you reached out
not with a solution
but with a commitment
that I realized what I had to do.

I did not choose to be alive
but at that moment
I did commit to getting better
